WoW Midnight Patch 12.0.5 'Lingering Shadows' Is Live — Everything Added Today

After extended maintenance that took North American servers offline from 7am to 3pm PT, World of Warcraft: Midnight's first major content patch is now live. Patch 12.0.5 — officially titled Lingering Shadows — is the expansion's first real post-launch content injection, and Blizzard has packed it with more than anyone expected from a point-release update. Here's everything you need to know before you log in.

Void Assaults — The New Open World Event

The headline addition is Void Assaults, a new type of large-scale open-world event split into two phases across Eversong Woods and Zul'Aman. The zones alternate on a weekly rotation.

Phase one is Void Strikes — smaller-scale skirmishes that appear in the active zone and rotate through different locations within it. Each completed Void Strike counts toward your Great Vault and awards Field Accolades. Once enough Void Strikes have been completed in a zone, phase two triggers: a full Void Incursion, which is a large-scale scenario requiring coordinated effort from many players and offering substantially better rewards. Think of it as a Void-themed equivalent of older WoW's Invasions, but designed for Midnight's faster content cadence.

Both activities count toward the World Content row of the Great Vault, meaning they're now a viable alternate path for players who prefer open-world content to dungeons and raids.

The Voidforge — A New Gear Track

The Voidforge is this patch's most significant long-term system addition. It's a new gearing pathway centered on two new currencies: Nebulous Voidcores and Ascendant Voidcores.

Nebulous Voidcores drop from all Season 1 endgame content — Midnight Season 1 raids, Mythic+ dungeons, Bountiful Delves, and Nightmare difficulty Prey Hunts. They can be spent at the Voidforge to target-craft specific gear pieces, finally giving players a way to chase the exact slot they need rather than relying purely on drop RNG. Two bonus Nebulous Voidcore tokens are also available weekly from the Voidforge for purchase with gold, Veteran Dawncrests, or Voidlight Marl.

Once you've built the initial Voidforge, a follow-up questline unlocks the Ascendant Nilhammer — a tool that lets you spend Ascendant Voidcores (earned from the same endgame content) to upgrade fully-upgraded Hero or Myth-tier weapons and trinkets to a new maximum item level. It's a meaningful power progression step for players approaching or at the seasonal ceiling.

Ritual Sites — Solo and Small Group Content

Ritual Sites are new 1–5 player scenarios scattered through the Midnight zones, designed to be accessible to solo players and small groups without requiring a full dungeon party. Cultists and naga are conducting rituals to empower themselves in ways that benefit the Void's overall invasion — your job is to disrupt them.

The content scales in difficulty through tiered challenges that players can activate before beginning, letting you adjust the difficulty ceiling to match your group's capability and desired reward level. Field Accolades and Great Vault contributions are available here too, making them another legitimate path through the weekly content loop.

Abyss Anglers — Yes, There's Fishing

Abyss Anglers is a new repeatable world event set in an underwater environment off the coast of Zul'Aman. It combines standard WoW fishing with treasure hunting in Void-corrupted waters, offering gear upgrade tokens, fishing-specific cosmetic rewards, and the kind of low-stress content that WoW's community has always embraced when Blizzard executes it well. Early players report it as a relaxing and rewarding side activity.

Decor Duels — The Wildcard Mode

The most immediately entertaining addition is also the hardest to explain seriously: Decor Duels is a team-based hide-and-seek PvP activity taking place in Silvermoon City. One team disguises themselves as housing decor items — chairs, bookshelves, rugs, vases — and attempts to blend into the environment. The opposing team has to find them before the timer expires.

Access it through the Group Finder PvP tab. Rewards include mounts, toys, and housing decor. Blizzard described it as "something to be said about having a little fun amidst all the danger," which is perhaps the most Blizzard sentence ever written. Community reception so far is exactly what you'd expect: chaotic, hilarious, and immediately addictive.

Class Tuning and Quality of Life

Patch 12.0.5 also delivers a large-scale class tuning pass — every spec in the game has received some level of adjustment, and the full patch notes are worth reading before you queue if your class has been underperforming or overperforming in Season 1. Balance changes are live immediately.

Housing UI receives multiple quality-of-life improvements. Players can now link furniture items from the catalog in chat. New transmog Situations are added — context-specific outfit rules that swap your appearance based on conditions including weather, time of day, and location. Dracthyr Evokers can now remain in Visage form during combat by default, reverting only for spells that specifically require their draconic physique.

A new Twitch Drop event begins April 23: watch any eligible WoW stream for four hours to earn the Cuddly Pearl Grrgle housing decor item. The drop runs until May 21.

The Bigger Picture

Midnight launched to strong reception earlier this year, and the speed of this content patch — arriving while many players are still working through Season 1 raiding — signals a faster cadence than previous expansions. The combination of world content (Void Assaults, Ritual Sites, Abyss Anglers), a new gear track (Voidforge), and a genuinely fun new mode (Decor Duels) represents a well-rounded patch that gives every type of player a reason to log in this week.

WoW Midnight Patch 12.0.5: Lingering Shadows is live now on NA servers. EU servers follow Wednesday morning.
